Al-Ahli Hospital participating in the national immunization campaign against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
Al-Ahli Hospital is participating in the national immunization campaign against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). The campaign starts from the 17th of October and continues until November 14, targeting the children aged one to 13 years.
The aim of this campaign is to improve and protect the health of Qatar's children from infectious diseases as stated in the objectives of the National Health Strategy; it is also in line with the World Health Organization's (WHO) international commitment to eliminate measles globally, in view of the fact that measles is a highly contagious viral disease which can cause serious health complications and disability.
Dr. Mohamad Anas Barakat the Consultant Pediatrician said that " This initiative from the Ministry of Public Health's is very important because the virus of measles, mumps and rubella are dangerous and can be transmitted through coughs and droplets from the mouth while sneezing. Measles is an infectious disease that can affects children and the elderly who are not immunized.
In addition he said "The incubation period last for 10 days. The Symptoms include prodromal fever, conjunctivitis, coryza (runny nose), cough, and small spots with white or bluish-white centers on an erythematous base on the buccal mucosa. A characteristic red, blotchy (maculopapular) rash appears on the third to seventh day after the prodromal symptoms appear. The rash begins on the face. Common complications include diarrhea, middle ear infection".
The people at High Risk for severe illness and complications from measles including Infants and children who takes immunosuppressant medicine, pregnant women, and People with compromised immune systems Dr. Anas indicates.
Dr Anas states that "There is some people who should not get MMR vaccine such as anyone who has ever had a life-threatening allergic reaction to component of MMR vaccine. Tell your doctor if you have any severe allergies .Some people who are sick at the time of the shot may be advised to wait until they recover before getting MMR vaccine. Pregnant women should not get MMR vaccine. Pregnant women who need the vaccine should wait until giving birth. Women should avoid getting pregnant for 4 weeks after being vaccinated with MMR vaccine".
There's no specific treatment for measles, Doctors are treating the Symptoms of the disease and the best way to prevent from measles, mumps and rubella is being vaccinated.
