Al-Ahli Hospital celebrates World Health Day

Free DVD on Back Pain; afternoon Exhibition and an evening Symposium to mark World Health Day

Al-Ahli Hospital will mark World Health Day by holding an Exhibition in  the afternoon and a Public Interaction Program in the evening.  World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April 2011 to mark the founding of the World Health Organization.  Al-Ahli Hospital’s program centers around its theme “Save your Back”.  There will be an afternoon exhibition open to the public, free of charge, where different departments will offer advice on Low Back Pain including medical departments such as Orthopedics, Neurology, Physiotherapy, Chiropractic Medicine, and Pharmacy.  Bone Mineral Density (DEXA) scans will be done free of charge and will be interpreted by doctors from the Rheumatology/Orthopedic Department.  A free DVD Guide on Low Back Pain will be given to the first 100 participants.  Additionally, a Public Interaction Program will be held in the evening at the hospital’s Auditorium, where consultants from Al-Ahli Hospital will give presentations on different aspects of Low Back Pain.

Mr. Abdulwahed Abdulla Al-Mawlawi, Managing Director and CEO of Medicare Group and Al-Ahli Hospital explained, “At Al-Ahli Hospital, we are led by the basic definition of health as stated by the World Health Organization – Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.  Our program on World Health Day focuses on prevention rather than the cure.  Back pain is a major worldwide health issue.  In the US alone, it is estimated that there are over 31 million people suffering from back pain and it reflects the huge size of the problem we face.  Our endeavor is to create awareness on how to deal with back pain on a day-to-day basis.”

Dr. Abdul Azim Abdul Wahab Hussain, Medical Director of Al-Ahli Hospital, stated, “Back pain is the most common of health problems, especially in adults.  One in every four adults will at some point in their lives suffer from back pain.  Our program on World Health Day will be coordinated by the different departments most involved in back pain.  Our Chiropractic Department, for instance, uses alternative therapies to relieve back pain. We encourage interested members of the public to pre-register for this event.”

Dr. Emmanuel Tolessa, Director of Orthopedics and Traumatology Department, stated: “As an Orthopedic Consultant, I have seen an increase in the number of back pain cases.  Whilst some instances cannot be avoided, like old age and accidents, we can change certain habits that will go a long way in reducing back pain cases.  Maintaining good posture, proper diet, regular exercise, protection whilst lifting & moving objects, and utilizing a proper bed & pillow will go a long way in reducing back pain.  We will have an afternoon Exhibition from 3pm to 6pm and thereafter a Public Interaction Program where senior medical staff members of our hospital will give a presentation on different aspects and treatment of back pain.”

“We will also be giving DVD's on Low Back Pain Exercise Guide to the first 100 Guests who will participate in the afternoon Exhibition and to the first 100 Guests who will attend the evening Symposium.  Additionally, we will also conduct a Bone Mineral Density test free of charge to all registered participants,” added Dr. Tolessa.
