Pathology and laboratory Medicine in Al-Ahli Hospital is divided into different sections:

BIOCHEMISTRY SECTION:

The Biochemistry section is supervised by a Consultant Chemical Pathologist; and daily operation is carried out by highly qualified and experienced medical laboratory technologists.
Biochemistry deals with the chemistry of body fluids such as blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, ascetic fluid, pleural fluid, synovial fluid, drainage fluid, dialysis fluid, cyst fluid, pancreatic fluid, bone marrow and renal and gall stones. The routine tests consist of lipid profile, liver function tests, heart enzymes, diabetic status, renal profile, electrolyte status etc. Also special investigations such as Glycosylated hemoglobin, protein electrophoresis for globulin fraction and hemoglobin electrophoresis are performed.
In the biochemistry section we use different sophisticated machines like Bachman Coulter DxC800 and CX9 PRO, Bio Rad D-10, Nova Blood Gas Analyzer, Dynex ELISA, MiniCap SEBIA electrophoresis and RIDA X-screen for allergy profile.

For the uncommon and rare diagnostic laboratory examinations, specimen are collected, processed and sent out to our reference laboratory in Germany.

HEMATOLOGY / BLOOD BANK SECTION:

Automated and manual differential of blood cells count are performed in this section. Other tests like ESR, reticulocytes, glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase screeing, malaria screeing, sickle cell screeing and complete coagulation profile are also performed. ABO/RH typing, direct and indirect Coomb’s test and blood transfusion services are also available. Transfusion medicine services and the supply of blood and blood products are available 24 hours upon request to the main Blood Bank at Hamad Medical Corporation where we have an existing agreement.

Two Advia 2120 platforms, Abbott CELL-DYN 3700, ACL advance, Humased are used in hematology section. While refrigerated centrifuge, Helmer plasma thawer, Helmer platelet incubator and rotator are used in the blood bank.

MICROBIOLOGY SECTION:

The section is supervised   by a Consultant Clinical Microbiologist; and routine examinations are performed by professional and experienced laboratory technologists
This division determines the sensitivity of the isolated pathogenic bacteria to the various antibiotics by utilizing an automated recent technology for the microbial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing, thereby, aiding the clinicians in the treatment of bacterial diseases. The department also carries out hospital surveillance tests to control nosocomial infection and their spread within the hospital. Stool and urine analysis for parasites and also diagnosis of fungal and mycobacterial infection are carried out in this section.

For the purpose of safety, quality and facilitating the work, the section is equipped by modern machines e.g. Vitek 2 Compact, Bactec 9120, Clinical 500 and safety cabinet hood.

SEROLOGY SECTION:

The section is headed by Consultant Clinical Pathologists. It is well managed by competent and highly qualified medical technologists.
Studies related to serological and immunological diagnosis of the disease are carried out in this section. All hepatitis viruses’ markers, serology tests for the recent and past detection of bacterial and viral infection are carried out here. HV and other venereal disease, related serology, PCR; DNA hybridization techniques are also available. Hormones like thyroid hormones, male and female reproductive hormones, autoimmune and tumor markers are carried out in this section.

Immulite 2000, Advia Centur XP, Abbott AXSYM and VIDAS are used as the main machines for serological determination.

PHLEBOTOMY SECTION:

The section operates by well trained phlebotomists. This section is responsible for the collection of blood from both community walk-in and in-house guests.

There are two phlebotomy rooms in the laboratory to provide the services to walk away community patients.

HISTOPATHOLOGY & CYTOLOGY SECTION:

Histopathology & Cytologyare combined as one section in the laboratory and is supervised by Histopathology and CytopathologyConsultant and powered by histopathology/cytology technologist.
In the histopathology section gross & microscopical detailed description is done. Various special stains are used to assess diagnosis whenever needed; also different immunohistochemical markers are used. It gives early prognosis & diagnosis to physicians thus, helping in out ruling different kinds of diseases e.g. tumors.
Frozen section is an intra-operative histopathological examination of tissue biopsy that is used to exclude or confirm diagnosis of malignancy. The diagnosis is done within short time (not exceeding 30 minutes) in order to plan surgical procedures afterwards.

In the cytology section examination of fluids, smears, brushing & washings is done. Various cytological tests are doneas the following:

1- Gynecological Cytology (Pap’s Smear):

It is a simple quick and painless screening test. This test is used to evaluate inflammatory/infectious or benign proliferative conditions to screen for unsuspected or to confirm suspected atypical, premalignant or malignant changes; and it’s also used for follow-up of patient with treated premalignant or malignant changes. In addition to conventional Pap smear, liquid Based Cytology (LBC) using the advanced SurePath technology is available for routine Pap smear.

2- Non-gynecological Cytology:

It includes sputum cytology, nipple discharge cytology, urine cytology, body fluids cytology, bronchial wash and brush cytology, gastric wash and brush cytology etc. All are done for differential diagnosis of benign versus malignant process and to define the nature of disease process. Obtaining of such samples may require no procedures as in sputum, urine & nipple discharge cytology.  Some samples may require special procedures as in bronchial, gastric & brush.

3- Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC):

The obtaining of biopsy material (cells or fluid) is done by fine or thin needle.

It’s a well established, accurate, safe, inexpensive and rapid diagnostic test that is routinely used as the first step in the evaluation of various mass lesions e.g. breast mass, thyroid swelling, lymph node enlargement, soft tissue masses etc. It is also used for different diagnosis of benign versus malignant process and to determine the nature of disease process. For the purpose of safety, quality and facilitating the work, the section is equipped by some modern machines e.g. liquid base cytology, LEICA tissue processor, LEICA microtome, LEICA slide cover slipper, LEICA staining machine and LEICA cryostat for frozen section.
