AL-AHLI Hospital is to launch minimal invasive (keyhole) gastric banding surgery for severely obese patients from November, it was announced yesterday.

Consultant general surgeon Dr Fritz Schafer, the head of surgery and medical director at District Hospital Bad Saulgau in Southern Germany, would be the team leader.

"There are many obese patients in Qatar and the region and the gastric banding surgery is a low-risk procedure for them," he said.

DOHA'S Al Ahli Hospital has added new equipment and staff to its obstetrics and gynaecology department.

The hospital said the revamped department has two consultants and six specialists all of whom are women.

THE clients of the UK-based International medical insurance provider GoodHealth can now get coverage for treatment at Qatar's Medicare Group (formerly Al Ahli Hospital).

An agreement was signed between Medicare Group and GoodHealth to extend the services to the clients medically insured by the latter, said a news item posted on the Doha Securities Market.

Talking to The Peninsula on the sidelines of the International Nurses Day celebrations at the hospital yesterday, Al Mawlawi said that there was great scope for private healthcare facilities in the country with the rapid growth in the population.

Qatar Insurance Company (QIC) medical insurance policy and medical insurance card holders can avail of medical services at Al Ahli Hospital (AAH) which now joins the QIC medical services provider network in Qatar with the signing of an agreement between the two institutions here yesterday.

Abdulwahed Al Mawlawi, Managing Director and CEO of Medicare Group and Al Ahli Hospital and Ali M Al Manai, Deputy CEO of Qatar Insurance Company signed the agreement at a ceremony held at Al Ahli Hospital.
